Hiker rescued from trail off Angeles Crest Highway, suffers minor injuries

Search and rescue teams from Montrose and Sierra Madre were able to locate a Pasadena man late Thursday night after he slipped over the edge of a hiking trail off Angeles Crest Highway, officials said.

The hiker -- identified in a KCAL-TV report as 23-year-old Leiland Merritt -- was a mile and a half into a trail at mile marker 62.5 at Angeles Crest Highway when he slipped over the edge, said Lt. John Hocking. During the fall, the hiker injured his leg. His friend was able to hike back to the base of the mountain and call the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies from Crescenta Valley Station responded to the call at 3 p.m. and tried to locate the hiker before the sun set and temperatures dropped into the low 30s.

“It’s much colder up there and that is definitely a worry,” Hocking said.
