Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide detectives and the Montrose Search and Rescue Team discovered human remains in the Angeles National Forest on Saturday, officials said.

Authorities were searching the area near Big Tujunga Canyon Road when they discovered the remains near mile marker 2.72, Deputy Kim Manatt told the Los Angeles Times.

The initial search began Jan. 9, when a hiker reported finding an apparent shallow grave near mile marker 2.92. No human remains were found at that time.

Detectives were waiting for the coroner’s office to assist with the investigation.

No other details were immediately available.
