La Cañada voters choosing both the old and new

La Cañada Flintridge residents expressed interest in putting both new and familiar faces on the City Council when deciding on whom to vote for Tuesday.

Ernest Koeppen, who ran for a seat on the school board in 2011, said he voted for Dave Spence and Joe Layton, two candidates with different backgrounds.

Spence has served on the council for more 20 years, while Layton is a newcomer. Both experience and fresh ideas are neede, said Koeppen.

Layton “has a new approach” while Dave “understands the process,” he said.

Several other residents who voted at the Foothill Municipal Water District headquarters said they cast their ballots for Spence and Layton. Planning Commissioner Jon Curtis is also running for one of two open seats on the council. Depsite the early election polls, both Spence and Curtis held comfortable leads as results came in.

At the Lutheran Church in the Foothills, more voters showed support for Layton.

Cameron Dwey, 22, said Layton knocked on his door and introduced himself. The visit had an impact on Dwey, who, like Layton, is a USC graduate.

Dwey also voted for Curtis, but he said Layton “was the only one I really cared about” in the election.
