LCF seniors win $1,000 scholarships

Eight high school seniors from La Cañada Flintridge were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship last week.

The La Cañada Thursday Club lauded Matt Singelyn, Colleen Degnan, Kara Lankey, Sophia Eckerle, Liza Upton, Katharine Henry, Danielle Smith and Colby Koklas for exceptional work.

Singelyn attends St. Francis High School and is the former manager of the school's football team. He plans to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, majoring in sports management.

Degnan attends Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, where she plays volleyball and has completed AP and honors-level courses. She plans to study business at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Lankey has received accolades as a varsity soccer player at La Cañada High School and a Girl Scout. She plans to continue playing soccer at Pacific University in Oregon while studying business.

Eckerle has been active in the community as a candy striper at Huntington Hospital, Girl Scout and volunteer for the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. She plans to attend USC after graduating from La Cañada High School.

Upton, another active teen in the community, has volunteered at the Pasadena Humane Society and wrote a $7,000 grant for the La Cañada High School Marching Band. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina to study business.

Henry, a member of La Cañada United Methodist Church and student at La Cañada High School, plans to attend Millsaps College to study religion. She is a Girl Scout and has been involved in the 30-Hour Famine campaign to raise awareness about hungry children and families in poor communities.

Smith, a student at Polytechnic School in Pasadena, is a varsity volleyball player National Merit Scholarship finalist. She plans to attend Duke University to study marine biology.

Koklas has held roles as an athletic trainer for St. Francis High School's football and soccer teams. As a Boy Scout, he attained the rank of Life Scout. He plans to attend Chapman University in Orange.
