La Canada crime: Theft at Home Goods, burglary at Walgreens

Feb. 21
Petty theft/shoplifting: 900 block of Foothill Boulevard. At around 2 p.m., a loss prevention agent at Home Goods contacted police after detaining a shoplifter. A security camera captured a woman in her 60s entering the store with a cart, which had a dog and a shopping bag in it. The woman picked up a pillow and placed it under her dog, then took two costume masks and placed them under the shopping bag. After some time, the suspect went to the checkout stand to pay for another item and was detained as she exited the store by the agent, who made a citizen’s arrest. She was booked for theft and released on a promise to appear in court.
Feb. 23
Possession of concentrated cannabis, marijuana: Angeles Crest Highway at Lavender Lane. An officer conducted a traffic stop just before 1 a.m. after noticing a vehicle speeding and straddling lanes. There was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car, and the driver was placed in the back seat of his patrol car. The passenger, a woman in her 20s, had two outstanding arrest warrants issued against her and was arrested on scene. An inspection of the vehicle revealed a plastic bottle containing a rock-like substance determined to be “hash,” concentrated cannabis. Two other bottles with marijuana were found on the suspect. The suspect claimed she had a medical marijuana card, but was advised that did not apply to concentrated forms of the substance and so was charged with possession. She was also charged with possession of marijuana for failing to produce her medical recommendation. The vehicle was released to the driver, and the narcotics were booked into evidence.

Burglary of a business: 3000 block of Foothill Boulevard. Police responded to a call from Walgreens reporting a petty theft from the morning before. At 11:47 a.m. on Thursday, two adult males entered the store and stole make-up items, including powder and several shades of liquid foundation. Each man took turns being a lookout as the other put items in his pants pockets. The pair left the store, got into a late ‘80s model Toyota and drove away. The store manager provided police with photographs taken from surveillance and a receipt of all the items stolen, which were booked as evidence. The suspects were not apprehended.
Feb. 18
Vandalism/graffiti: 2900 block of Community Avenue, Crescenta Valley High School. While working as a school resource officer on campus between the hours of 7 to 10 a.m., a deputy noticed a “tagging” made on the toilet seat of a boys’ restroom. The officer took a photograph of the graffiti, which read “gAUST” in black permanent marker. No witnesses could be located. An associate principal and a custodian were notified. Earlier that week, on Feb. 14, the same officer observed another tag, “DGK,” written on a retaining wall by the staff parking lot.
Feb. 20
Theft by credit card: 4700 block of Rosemont Avenue. Police responded to a call from a woman who claimed someone had used her credit card to purchase fuel at a La Cañada gas station. The victim had not made a purchase at that time, and had the card in her possession, but details of the transaction were listed on her credit card statement. Her initial call was forwarded to the sheriff’s fraud department, and police advised her to contact a credit bureau about the fraudulent charges.
