La Cañada’s three elementary schools concluded the first week of the 2015-16 school year on Friday, welcoming new and returning students and their families with campuswide picnic events.

Palm Crest Elementary served up burgers hot off the grill as students dined with their friends and loved ones on the school’s playing fields. Principal Karen Hurley visited with diners, giving families a warm welcome to the Panthers’ campus.

The school started the new year with 621 students enrolled in grades K-6. Across town, La Cañada Elementary held a picnic for its 679 students and their families, while a total of 720 Paradise Canyon students were welcomed in Friday’s schoolwide picnic.

The elementary school students were part of a districtwide enrollment of 4,070 La Cañada Unified students, according to figures provided by Supt. Wendy Sinnette.
