Letter: Garden stewardship doesn’t bode well

Re: “Rosarium raises thorny questions,” April 16. My family’s Descanso Gardens membership has given us immeasurable enjoyment over the years. Descanso Gardens own mission statement acknowledges that it is “a unique Southern California landscape distinguished by its specialized botanic collections, historical significance, and rare natural beauty” and, as its director, David Brown has a duty to “practice exemplary stewardship of Descanso’s distinctive character and assets.”
While it is understandable that change comes to every garden over time, under Brown’s tutelage it has been an all too regular occurrence to witness the removal of mature trees, historic camellias and charming features from this lovely public garden. Now it appears that the unique and significant International Rosarium is threatened by neglect and the possibility of being destroyed in an attempt at modernization over preservation.
Just as it is important to protect historic buildings in our community, it is imperative that we look after this rare and special garden for future generations. Those of us who appreciate this community treasure need to let those whose duty it is to protect it know that we value the Rosarium’s conservation and we will not let its destruction go through without comment or without a challenge. If Brown is reluctant to save the Rosarium, perhaps those at the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, our local politicians and members of the garden who donate funds toward its upkeep will listen to our concerns.
