Letter: One easy way to conserve water

Since we’re in a drought that’s only going to get worse here in La Cañada Flintridge, and we’d be wise to change our water habits sooner rather than later, I think you would serve the community if you ran a small feature every once in a while on tips and hacks to save (and extend) water. You could start a dialogue with the community on what we’re all doing that works.

Here’s one I’ve come up with to capture the “forewater” of your shower (I don’t know what else to call the cold shower water that’s prior to the hot water):

Using what’s handy, you can capture your shower water and reuse it. Many of us have the fibrous face and body scrubbers that we use in the shower, shaped like a glove or mitten. Take one of them and put it over your shower head. Secure it by means of a fat rubber band, some Velcro, or even string. Get a bucket. Turn on the shower, and the mitten will make the spray into a stream, which you capture in your bucket. Use the water to water thirsty plants.

My shower wastes about 2.5 gallons each morning getting to hot water. That’s 75 gallons a month, 912 gallons a year! That’s close to a thousand gallons that you now can use to “spot water.”
