Letter: Sales at ALF store benefit community

Re: “The fire’s out at Dragon Thrift,” June 25. I was saddened to see the closing of the Dragon Thrift Shop. It was widely regarded as an important contributor to the needs of many philanthropic efforts, with funds provided by the work of its many dedicated volunteers through the years. An example of their generosity to the community is their donation of equipment, store supplies and other goods to the Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF) Bargain Box Thrift Shop. These items are greatly appreciated.
If you were a Dragon Thrift shop enthusiast — as a shopper, a donor, or as a volunteer — I encourage you to continue your local patronage and support through our ALF Bargain Box. Much like the Dragon Thrift Shop, it is staffed and managed entirely by community volunteers. At the Bargain Box, proceeds from sales fund a number of philanthropic programs supporting children and seniors throughout La Cañada Flintridge and the Crescenta Cañada Valley.
ALF administers many programs including ALF Summer School, children’s Drama and Instrumental Music programs, Operation School Bell providing school supplies and uniforms for students in need, and Retired Service Volunteers program for seniors. Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals (CAP), ALF’s auxiliary, administers SPROUTS, Cappy Bears, CAP Care PACs, and scholarships. Assisteens, ALF’s other auxiliary, provides after-school tutoring, goody bags for Union Station, Birthday Boxes for students at Harambee School and more. Assistance League of Flintridge actively identifies and reviews needs in the community that can be supported through funds earned at the Bargain Box.
We invite you to stop by ALF’s Bargain Box Thrift Shop at 4607 Oakwood Ave. to make a purchase or donate your gently used goods. Either way, you are supporting many philanthropic programs.
If you would like to join us serving in our philanthropic programs or in staffing the Bargain Box, or if you just have questions, we look forward to hearing from you. ALF welcomes new members at any time throughout the year; all members may choose their level of participation.
