New readers for local church

First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Canada Flintridge, announced this week the election of new readers for their church services.

Longtime La Cañada resident Jennifer Essen is the church’s new first reader. Jane Boessen, a Sunland resident, was elected second reader. They will both serve one-year terms.

Essen runs the 10 a.m. Sunday service and reads from “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. Boessen reads from the Bible. The Sunday service also includes hymns and prayers.

On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Essen runs the meeting her own, gathering Scriptural readings customized to the needs of the congregation, the occasion and the community.

The church, located at 600 Foothill Blvd., also offers Sunday School at 10 a.m., for children and young people through their 19th year. Child care is available for all who are too young for Sunday School or church.
