Letter: Serious water issues have not gone away

The May 8 Valley Sun article about students Derek Jiang and Shelby Perez and their wonderful artwork in the “Water is Life” poster contest reminded me of the environmental art I was always having my art students create when I was an art teacher in L.A. city schools 40 years ago!
Having learned about future water shortages long ago when our water bills were practically nonexistent and world population was only at 3 billion people, I noticed that science and health teachers were not teaching about this important issue. So I brought it to light as my students painted ocean scenes, deserts and landscapes and learned about water, air pollution, global warming and the negative impact that large numbers of people make upon Mother Nature. They won prizes in environmental art contests and I was as proud of them as I am Derek and Shelby.
I hope all La Cañada residents will start watering their lawns less, recycling sink and shower water, using only full loads in their laundry and dishwashers, and finding lots of other creative ways to save water for their future.
