Stacey Sharp, with sons Spencer, left, and Ryan, right, won the pumpkin baking contest with her husband’s grandmother’s pumpkin bread recipe at the annual USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Health Fair, at their location on Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017. Bernice’s Pumpkin Bread, as Sharp calls it, is made as follows: In large bowl, combine: dry ingredients, 3 1/3 cups flower; 3 cups sugar; 1/2 teaspoon baking powder; 2 teaspoons baking soda; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 teaspoon cinnamon; 1 teaspoon nutmeg. Then in an electric mixing bowl, combine wet ingredients 1 cup vegetable oil; 2/3 cups water; 4 eggs; 1 can of pumpkin (Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin, 29 oz can). Then add the dry ingredients slowly to the wet ingredients. Mix on low for a couple of minutes until fully blended. Put in greased and floured pans. This recipe makes three loaves. Bake one hour at 350 degrees F or until toothpick comes out clean. (Raul Roa / Staff Photographer)
