Valley Sun Sports Roundup: La Cañada girls’ volleyball sweeps to win in playoff opener

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada d. Alta Loma, 25-17, 25-22, 29-27: The Spartans went on the road Thursday for its CIF Southern Sewction Division IV playoff opener.

The Spartans (22-8) finished runner-up in the Rio Hondo League, while Alta Loma (25-10) won the Palomeras League championship.

La Cañada moves on to the second round Saturday, when it will face No. 1 Ontario Christian.

Ontario Christian (29-3), the Ambassador League champion, defeated Sage Hill, 25-15, 25-10, 25-16, in its playoff opener Thursday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Montgomery d. Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17: Visiting Flintridge Sacred Heart fell Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round match.

The Tologs (28-13) got 33 assists from Ellie Lund, 14 kills and seven digs from Emma Willingham, nine kills and seven digs from Peyton DeJardin and seven kills from Ferryn Drake.

Flintridge Sacred Heart finished fourth in the Mission League.

Bishop Montgomery (25-5) captured the Del Rey League championship.

Archer d. Flintridge Prep, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17: Flintridge Prep, making its first postseason appearance since 2008, lost Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division V first-round road match.

The Rebels (15-8) received an at-large berth after finishing fifth in the Prep League.

Archer (19-5) won the Liberty League title.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 16, Alemany 2: Visiting Flintridge Sacred Heart clinched an outright Sunshine League championship Thursday.

The Tologs (10-4, 8-0 in league) last won the league title in 2015.

Flintridge Sacred Heart received sweeps in singles from Meghan Garrity, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and Meghan Sullivan, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and MJ Von der Ahe picked up two wins, 6-0, 6-1.

Westridge 14, Flintridge Prep 4: The Rebels suffered a Prep League road defeat Thursday at Muir High.

Flintridge Prep dipped to 5-8, 2-7 in league.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

St. Francis 21, Roosevelt 1: St. Francis (23-3) coasted to a nonleague win Wednesday.
