Randolph qualifies to gymnastics championships

Incoming La Cañada High senior Matthew Randolph qualified for the National Gymnastics Championships during the Men’s Gymnastics National Qualifiers at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The two-day event concluded Sunday, with Randolph tallying 71.5 points during preliminaries and 47.7 points in the finals for 119.2 total points.

He placed seventh in the all-around competition, securing the last men’s junior slot for the gymnastics championships, the United States national gymnastics championship for all men and women, juniors and seniors.

The competition will be taking place in the Honda Center in Anaheim from Aug. 17-20. At the gymnastics championships, Randolph will be competing on the same floor as members of the United States Men’s and Women’s Olympic and National Teams.

During an Olympic year, the Olympic gymnastics teams are selected based on the results of this competition.

Although Randolph has competed in the Junior Olympic National Championships for the last three years, placing first in his Junior Olympic age group in the high bar in 2016 and first in parallel bars in 2015, this is the first time he has qualified for the National Gymnastics Championships.

Randolph competes for Payke Gymnastics in Alhambra.
