Turley wraps up season with Minnesota Twins
La Cañada resident Nik Turley saw his first season with the Minnesota Twins organization come to a close.
Turley, a left-hander, spent most of the campaign with Minnesota and the triple-A affiliate Rochester Red Wings.
After beginning the season at Rochester, Turley was called up by Minnesota three times. He went 0-2 with an 11.21 earned-run average in 10 appearances (three starts). He struck out 13 and walked eight in 17 2/3 innings. He yielded 30 hits and 22 runs, all earned.
Minnesota finished 85-77 for second place in the American League’s Central Division. The Twins, who lost 103 games in 2016, suffered an 8-4 road loss against the New York Yankees on Tuesday in a wild-card game. Turley wasn’t on the Minnesota postseason roster.
At Rochester, Turley finished 5-4 with a 2.66 ERA in 18 appearances. He struck out 79 and walked 22 in 67 2/3 innings. Turley gave up 58 hits and 24 runs (22 earned).
He also made five appearances with the double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, going 0-1 with a 0.37 ERA.
Long odds go against Katie Johnson, Seattle Reign
Many things had to go right for the Seattle Reign women’s soccer team and Flintridge Sacred Heart alumna Katie Johnson to reach the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs.
The Reign entered the final week of the regular season in fifth place and six points behind fourth-place Orlando for the final playoff spot.
Seattle needed to win its final two games and hope that Orlando would drop its last two to pull even.
While the Reign did its part by winning its final two games, ultimately Seattle only gained a point in the standings after Orlando tied and won its final two games.
Seattle finished the regular season with 34 points and a 9-8-7 record to take fifth place.
Johnson finished a season at forward in which she tallied four goals and two assists in 23 matches with 19 total shots on goal.
Former area standouts collide in season finale
When the New Jersey Sky Blue FC and Boston Breakers women’s soccer teams met in the regular season finale of the National Women’s Soccer League on Saturday afternoon, the match was a meeting of two former area standouts.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Kayla Mills is a defender for Sky Blue and took on the Boston Breakers and Brooke Elby, a Flintridge Prep product and fellow defender.
The result was anything but defensive as Sky Blue defeated Boston, 4-3.
The victory finished off a 10-11-13 season for the New Jersey squad, which finished sixth in the standings and missed the postseason. Boston ended the year in ninth with a 4-13-7 mark.
Mills played in 16 games and started 13 for Sky Blue, while finishing with two shots. Elby played in 13 matches with 10 starts this season and finished with six shots.
