Sports Roundup: La Cañada basketball, soccer squads open league with victories


La Cañada 56, Temple City 48: Brooke Yasuda had 16 points and seven rebounds on Wednesday to lead the Spartans to a Rio Hondo League-opening victory on the road.


Tess Oakley-Stilson had nine points, five rebounds and four assists and Natalie Shamilian had nine points and nine rebounds for the Spartans (12-4), the reigning league champions who have won 24 straight league games.

Harvard-Westlake 65, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 22: Host Flintridge Sacred Heart dropped a Mission League-opening game Tuesday. The Tologs are 2-11.



La Cañada 62, Temple City 50: The Spartans started defense of their Rio Hondo League championship with a road win Wednesday. La Cañada (9-8) got 18 points from Ryan Graves, 15 from Jivan Shirvanian and 11 each from Patric Panoosi and Brendan Co.

Flintridge Prep 78, McAuliffe 41: The Rebels received 26 points from Majeed Ismail in the nonleague win Wednesday.

AJ Nicassio added 13 points for Flintridge Prep (6-9).

Alemany 84, St. Francis 50: St. Francis dropped a Mission League road game Wednesday. The Golden Knights are 9-6, 0-2 in league.


La Cañada 2, Temple City 0: Defense of their Rio Hondo League title began Wednesday at home for the Spartans, who tallied their sixth shutout of the season.

La Cañada improved to 7-3-2.


St. Francis 6, Alemany 1: The visiting Golden Knights rolled to a Mission League win Wednesday.

St. Francis (8-4-1, 2-0 in league) got two goals apiece from Colton Ramirez and Sebastyan Enriquez.

La Cañada 8, Temple City 0: The Spartans began defense of their Rio Hondo League on Wednesday with a resounding victory on the road.

La Cañada improved to 5-2-3.


Chadwick 5, Flintridge Prep 4: The Rebels lost a Prep League nailbiter on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Prep dropped to 2-6, 1-2 in league.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 19, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3: The Tologs fell Tuesday in a Mission League road match.
