Sports Roundup: La Canada wrestler ends historic career in state competition

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

Sophie Garcia in CIF State Wrestling Championship: The La Canada High wrestler came up short in the consolation round of 16 in the event Friday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

The senior fell to a close 2-1 decision against Maliya Castillo of Ridgeview High in a 170-pound bout. The loss marked the end of the season for the program’s first-ever girls’ wrestler to qualify for the state competition.

Garcia, who qualified for the CIF State Wrestling Championships last season as well after a third-place finish in the 2017 CIF Southern Section Girls’ Wrestling Championships, reached this year’s state championships after a fourth-place finish in the Masters Meet.

Garcia dominated in an 11-0 victory against Birmingham senior Vianeth Jimenez in the opening round of the state championship, Thursday before before being pinned by fifth-seed Boaanh Duncon of Clovis in the third period of the round of 16 championship bracket to set up a match in Friday’s consolation round.

SOFTBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 14, Flintridge Prep 0 (five innings): Flintridge Sacred Heart rolled to a nonleague road victory Friday.

The Tologs improved to 4-1.

The Rebels are 0-1.

BASEBALL

La Cañada 7, Westlake 2: The Spartans (3-2) earned a road win in an Easton Tournament contest.

St. Francis 6, San Dimas 5: St. Francis (3-3) earned a home win Thursday in a Quartz Hill Tournament contest at the Glendale Sports Complex.

The Golden Knights received two hits each from Mikey Kane, Doyle Kane and Stephen Castro.

Pitchers Ethan Sanders, Kiko Robles and Ryan Rizzo combined on a two-hitter. Sanders registered the victory and Rizzo picked up the save.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep d. Brentwood, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18: AJ Nicassio finished with 16 kills Friday to spark host Flintridge Prep in a season-opening nonleague win.

Bishop Amat d. La Cañada, 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19: The Spartans tipped of their season Thursday on the road with a nonleague loss.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Valencia Valencia 86, La Cañada 68: La Cañada began its season Thursday with a nonleague road defeat.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 89, Chaminade 69: Flintridge Sacred Heart began its season Thursday with a Mission League win at Loyola High.

Valencia Valencia 124, La Cañada 46: Visiting La Cañada opened its season Thursday with a road loss.
