Sports Roundup: La Cañada wrestling moves three grapplers to second day of CIF championships
WRESTLING
La Cañada at CIF Southern Section Inland Division Championships: Out of 11 Spartans’ grapplers, three earned advancement past the first day of competition Friday at Temecula Great Oak High.
La Cañada senior 160-pounder Ben Donoho, senior 145-pounder David Sarkisian and senior 195-pounder Colman Trulik are vying to become the Spartans’ first Masters Meet qualifiers in three seasons.
A wrestler must finish in the top five to earn advancement to the Masters Meet.
“We were kind of hoping for a few more advancers, but the three going on, they all feel confident moving forward,” La Cañada coach Justin Luthey said. “Colman and Sarkisian both wrestled the No. 1 seed and Ben gets that next, so the guys are all going against the best.”
Donoho stands the best chance of moving on as the fourth-seeded wrestler finished 3-0 with three pins and earned a spot into Saturday’s semifinals versus top-seeded Kaimana McCreadie of Irvine. All Donoho needs is one victory Saturday to advance.
Sarkisian finished 2-1 with two pins before running into top-seeded Beau Perez of San Marino and losing, 12-0, in the quarterfinals. Sarkisian opens second-chance bracket action Saturday versus Murrieta Valley’s Chris Martinez needing at least two wins to advance.
Trulik is in the same position as the 195-pounder finished 2-1 with two pins before surrendering a fall against top-seeded David Barela of Northview in the quarterfinals. Trulik will face Santa Maria’s Eluterio Edralin in second-chance action Saturday.
Wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
La Cañada’s other eight grapplers ended their seasons Friday.
La Cañada 170-pounder Johnny Vasily and 182-pounder Lyndon Forest finished 2-2 with two pins, 132-pounder Cameron Carey and 138-pounder Brandon Abboud finished 1-2, while 126-pounder Aram Behshid, 106-pounder Hayden Henderson, 113-pounder Stephen Broberg and 152-pounder William Henderson were 0-2.
