Locals ready for playoffs

All five Gladiator tackle-football teams were in the hunt for the playoffs as they entered the final week of the regular season.

The Pee-Wees, Junior Midgets and Midget teams all advanced to the playoffs, while the Gremlin and Junior Pee-Wee teams were eliminated from postseason contention with defeats on Saturday.

The Pee-Wees are Arroyo League champions, boasting a 6-1 record at the end of the season after a convincing 40-16 victory against the Walnut-Diamond Bar Cowboys on Saturday in Rosemead. The Pee-Wees will face the Azusa Raiders in the first round of the playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rosemead.

The Junior Midgets finished the regular season undefeated at 7-0 after a 13-0 victory against Rosemead to capture the Arroyo League championship. They will face the Pico Rivera Dons in the first round of playoffs at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rivera Park in Pico Rivera.

The undefeated Midget team will face the East L.A. Bobcats Sunday at Garfield High in East Los Angeles. The Midgets, who clinched a playoff berth, will begin playoffs the following week.

The Gremlins began the season with two losses but then went on a four-game winning streak. The streak ended Saturday with a 34-0 defeat at the hands of the undefeated Rosemead Rebels. The Gremlins ended the regular season with a 4-3 record and will play the Charter Oak Chargers Saturday at Charter Oak High in a Friendship Bowl game.

The Junior Pee-Wees also finished the season at 4-3. A two-game winning streak was snapped Saturday by the Rosemead Rebels, who defeated the locals 33-0. The Junior Pee-Wees will hit the road Sunday to play the Hacienda Heights Cougars.
