La Cañada girls’ swim pulls out win

The La Cañada High girls’ swim team continued its winning ways with victories over Monrovia and Blair in a tri-meet at Monrovia on March 24.

Katy Campbell (200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle), Sarah Olson (50 and 100 freestyle) and Morgan Harrick (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly) were each double winners. Mackenzie Heaton (100 breaststroke) and Sarah Campbell (100 backstroke) each won an event as well.

Olson, Heaton and the Campbell sisters also won the 200 freestyle and medley relays. The Spartans will compete again in the Morrow Invitational at Beverly Hills High School at 2 p.m. Friday.

Spartans fall in league opener

The La Cañada High boys’ tennis team kicked off Rio Hondo League competition against San Marino on March 22. The Spartans fell, 16-2.

Joshua Kim and Joony Wang delivered La Cañada’s two wins. Kim defeated the Titans’ No. 3 singles player 6-0, and Wang defeated San Marino’s No. 2 singles 6-2.

The Spartans had a 4-3 record (0-1in Rio Hondo League play) before continuing league play against South Pasadena on Tuesday.

Sports medicine event at St. Francis

St. Francis High, along with the California Athletic Trainers Association (CATA), will host the 9th Annual High School Sports Medicine Competition Saturday at the St. Francis campus from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The competition gives students an opportunity to take part in both written and hands-on practical testing. This year’s competition will field the largest attendance to date, as roughly 550 students representing 33 schools will take part in the largest sports medicine competition in California.

Martin Vogel, who was a top American Motorcycle Association competitor before suffering a spinal cord injury, will be the event’s keynote speaker. He coined the term “handi-capable” and has gone on to enjoy a successful career in marathon and distance competitions, where he has broken numerous records and won world championships.

CATA will award the High School Athletic Training Student of the Year at the end of the day.
