Panthers pounce on Walnut

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Pasadena Poly 9, Walnut 4: Fueled by Henry Pray’s six goals, the Panthers picked up a nonleague win Friday to improve to 20-1 overall.

Kelly McGee scored two and Chris McWilliams added one in a winning effort.

Poly, ranked No. 3 in Division 5, picked up its second win of the season over Walnut, ranked eighth.

Panthers goalkeeper Colin Woolway collected 11 saves.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westridge 14, Webb 4: Maral Tavatian and Lena Tavatian swept their singles sets Friday afternoon to lead the Tigers to a league home win at Muir High.

The two singles players won their sets by a score of 6-0, while Westridge’s No. 1 doubles team of Erin Wong and Erin McDonald won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

Westridge improved to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in league, while Webb dipped to 4-9 and 2-6.

On Thursday, Maral Tavatian and Lena Tavatian won all six of their sets, as the Tigers cruised to a nonleague 15-3 home win over Marymount at Muir High. Wong and McDonald won their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

La Cañada 13, South Pasadena 5: The Spartans were able to lock up second place in the Rio Hondo League for the second straight year with a win over the Tigers Thursday.

Sharon Kim and Sawa Keymeuler, the Spartans’ No. 1 and 2 singles players, both swept Thursday, as did La Cañada’s No. 1 (Alison Chang and Linnea Frazier) and 2 (Emily Swanson and Serena Zheng) doubles teams.

La Cañada (7-7, 5-1 in league) will continue league play when it takes on Monrovia at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Pasadena Poly 18, Mayfield 0: The Panthers improved to 10-3 overall and 3-3 in the Prep League with the win Thursday afternoon.

Maranatha 14, Village Christian 4: Joelle Cheng and Hailey Negron won all six of their singles sets Thursday afternoon to propel the Minutemen to an Olympic League road victory. The doubles teams of Sandy Thong and Patty Ling, Gigi Yip and Michaela Trimmer, and Talar Behesnilian and Sabrina Hong each won two of three sets as Maranatha improved to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in league.

Flintridge Prep 10, Chadwick 8: Andrea Kevakian swept her three sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, to spark the Rebels on Thursday in a Prep League match at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center. Jenise Vargas also swept, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3, for Flintridge Prep, which improved to 12-4, 6-2 in league.

Louisville 15, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3: Emily Katz won a singles set, 6-0, for the Tologs in a Mission League match Thursday at Fremont Tennis Center. Sacred Heart dropped to 3-6, 2-5 in league.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada 3, South Pasadena 0: The Tigers came out strong Thursday, scoring 21 points in the first game, but they were swept by the Spartans, 25-21, 25-13, 25-13, who continued marching through the Rio Hondo League. La Cañada’s outside hitters Kendall Walbrecht and Micaela Anderson had a team-high 17 and 13 kills, respectively, against South Pasadena (8-5, 3-3). Catherine Horner had 12 digs and Kirstie Shurie had 39 assists for the Spartans (16-7, 7-0).

Crescenta Valley 3, Muir 0: Noel Wong recorded 13 aces and Allison Reik had 12 kills for the Falcons in a 25-10, 25-4, 25-14 Pacific League road match on Thursday. Nanette Grigorian added 10 aces for Crescenta Valley, which improved to 7-6 and 6-5 in league.

Rio Hondo Prep 3, Flintridge Prep 1: Katrina Boyd collected 24 digs for Flintridge Prep in a 25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 25-12 Prep League road defeat Thursday. Kate Woolley and Julia Miller finished with 13 and nine kills, respectively, for the Rebels (4-11, 1-8).

GIRLS’ GOLF

Two advance to CIF Southern Section Individual Regional: A pair of area players advanced to the CIF Southern Section Individual Regionals after finishing among the top eight at the Pacific League individual final Thursday at Jurupa Hills Country Club in Riverside.

Among those advancing to the regionals, which will be held Oct. 31 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard, were Melissa Leo of La Cañada and Tiffany Gu of San Marino.

Leo fired a seven-over par 77 for a two-round score of 272 and Gu had a 74 for 279.
