Rebels finish tournament strong

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 42, Morningside L.A. 31: The Rebels finished ninth in the San Gabriel Valley Classic Tournament with a win on Saturday at San Marino High. Maya Okamoto led the way for Prep (2-2) with 20 points and Kimberly Kim added six.

It was the second win in a row for the Rebels, who beat Sacred Heart L.A., 36-31, in the tournament at San Marino on Friday. Okamato had 13 points and Kim had 10 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 67, Immaculate Heart 54: The Tologs put their first-game blunder behind them and started a winning streak with their second straight win, a 13-point victory in the San Gabriel Valley Classic Tournament at South Pasadena High Friday.

Lana Haddad led the way with a team-high 22 points and 15 rebounds for Sacred Heart (2-1). Amber Casillas and Ivy Fitzgerald both added 14 points each for Sacred Heart. Dana Budzyn did a bit of everything for the Tologs, racking up 11 rebounds, eight points, seven steals and five assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pasadena City College 81, Moorpark 57: The Lancers improved to 5-3 this season with a victory over Moorpark on the first day of PCC’s Thanksgiving Tournament Friday, extending their winning streak to three games.

Pasadena led Moorpark, 41-34, at halftime, then upped that advantage to 49-37 early on the second half on back-to-back, three-pointers by sophomore transfer guard Givon Crump, who finished with a team-high 18 points.

Laik Carter, a freshman center, posted a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds), Ryan McGrath came off the bench to score 11 points and Marquise Tolson contributed 10 points and eight rebounds for PCC.

The Lancers resume action today against Barstow at 4 p.m.

Caltech 63, Pacifica 62: The Beavers defended their home court Tuesday, pulling out a dramatic, one-point victory over Pacifica. The game featured 11 lead chances and seven ties.

Bryan Joel gave Caltech (1-1) a one-point edge, 61-60, but a layup gave Pacifica (0-4) a 62-61 lead with 44 seconds left in the game. With about 10 seconds remaining, Caltech got the ball down low to Alex Runkel, who laid it off to a cutting teammate, Ethan Boroson, who laid it up and in to finish the scoring at 63-62.

The Gladiators got the ball to their leading scorer, Alex Brandon (19 points), on their next possession, but his jumper was deflected by Joel and rebounded by Boroson as time ran out.

Michael Edwards led Caltech’s offense with 28 points, after converting six of his 12 three-point shots. In his first career start, Joel had 12 points. Runkel recorded his first career double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

MIT 100, Caltech 26: Caltech fell to 0-2 on the season with a nonconference home loss on Friday night.

Rachel Hess had a team-high 12 points for Caltech.

Pasadena City College 69, LA Trade Tech 54: The Lancers wrapped up third place in the Saddleback College Lady Guacho Classic Tournament with a victory on Wednesday. Pasadena went on a 16-2 run to close the first half and go into halftime with a 36-22 lead. Stella Ghazarian had a team-high 19 points for PCC off the bench. Sabrina Martinez had 10 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals for the Lancers. Pasadena’s forward Destinee Sellers had 12 points and nine rebounds and was selected to the Lady Gaucho Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Lancers fell to East Los Angeles College, 71-58, in the tournament’s semifinals Tuesday. The loss snapped a 20-game win streak PCC held over East Los Angeles (5-1). Ghazarian had 17 points in the defeat. Pasadena (2-4) defeated Southwestern, 70-67, in the first round Monday.
