Roszkos leads All-CIF Spartans

Throughout the regular season, the La Cañada High boys' water polo team relied on a balanced offense. Spartans Coach Steve Neville knew his squad would need a go-to scorer down the stretch.

Trevor Roszkos, La Cañada's senior driver and the Rio Hondo League's Most Valuable Player, became the team's primary scorer in the postseason, which led to him becoming an All-CIF Southern Section Division III first-teamer when the list was released Monday.

"For us to succeed in the playoffs, the whole team has to work well together and that one guy has to stand out," Neville said. "Trevor was that guy."

Roszkos said the All-CIF honor is like a dream come true for him.

"I was extremely hopeful [I would make it] because making All-CIF is a huge deal," Roszkos said. "It was kind of my goal since the start of the season and I was ecstatic when I heard."

Roszkos finished the year with 58 goals, 49 assists and 67 steals. The best example of his dominance came when he scored five goals in La Cañada's 9-7 Division III quarterfinal victory over Aliso Niguel.

"I was the senior on the team and I had to be there to lead the guys through it," Roszkos said. "If we needed something, I had to try to make it happen. I had to do whatever I could to keep us going."

The Spartans put together a 22-7 record with an 8-0 mark in league and advanced to the Division III semifinals for the first time in five years. Laguna Beach, the eventual Division III champs, got the best of La Cañada in the semis, 14-5.

La Cañada's Chase Borisoff and Allen Morovati both got All-CIF second-team nods for their stellar postseason play.

Borisoff posted a team-high 135 assists, 112 steals and 55 goals as a junior utility. Morovati, a senior two-meter, had 78 steals, 66 drawn ejections and 37 goals this season.

"Chase was extremely key with our team. He is an amazing passer and whenever you wanted the ball he seemed to get it to you. He made so much happen with our offense," Roszkos said. "Allen and I knew this was our last chance as seniors and I know how badly he wanted it. He really opened everything up on offense for us."

Symeon Stefan, the Spartans' junior utility, reaped an All-CIF third-team honor. He scored a team-high 63 goals, 73 steals and 27 assists for La Cañada this year.
