Rebels rising to title defense

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 0, Don Lugo 0 (3-0): The Rebels, ranked ninth in CIF Southern Section Division III, defeated Don Lugo on penalty kicks in the first round of the Ontario Christian Tournament.

Abby Letts scored the shootout clincher after Casey Cousineau had made a tremendous diving save to lead to the win for the defending-champion Rebels (5-1). Kate Lyon and Kaelin King also had PK scores, while Don Lugo’s first two shooters missed the net on their attempts.

The Rebels then won in the quarterfinals, 1-0, against Valley Christian on a goal by Arielle Baptiste.

Cousineau, who had four saves against Don Lugo, had three saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 1, St. Augustine’s 1: The Golden Knights battled to a draw in their Nike Southern California Classic opener Tuesday. Luca Coppola anchored St. Francis in goal with nine saves and Matt Laterza scored the Golden Knights’ only goal of the game.

Things didn’t go as well for St. Francis in its second game of the day against San Pasqual. The Golden Knights (1-5-3) fell, 6-1, with Brookes Treidler scoring their lone goal.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Golden Valley 44, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 42: Lana Haddad had 12 points Wednesday for the Tologs (5-6) in a pool-play game of the New Year’s Ball Tournament at La Cañada High. It was the Tologs’ second loss of the tournament after falling to Moorpark, 58-40, on Tuesday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Catalina Foothills (Ariz.) 84, Flintridge Prep 73: Kory Hamane finished with a game-high 26 points Wednesday for the Rebels (4-4) in a Mayors Division consolation contest of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic. Robert Cartwright added 19 points for Flintridge Prep, which received 12 from Chadd Cosse and 10 from Jedrick Eugenio.

La Cañada 64, Bell-Jeff 45: Twelve Spartans scored in their La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic opener Tuesday. Darrell Dansby had a team-high 11 points for La Cañada in the win. Ryan Lee and Conner Boyd had 10 and eight points, respectively, for the Spartans (6-4).

Renaissance Academy 68, Don Lugo 53: The Wildcats improved to 10-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the Nogales Tournament on Tuesday behind 25 points and 10 rebounds from Jessy Cantinol and 21 points from Vince DeGuzman.

Cantinol also had a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) in Renaissance Academy’s 71-34 win over El Rancho Monday. Freshmen Marquise Mosley and Kevin Dinges both scored 11 points for the Wildcats against El Rancho.
