Bulldogs climb Mt. Carmel

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Pasadena in the Mt. Carmel Tournament: The Bulldogs (7-5) captured the tournament championship Friday night by defeating host Mt. Carmel of San Diego, 54-43, and now head into Pacific League play next week.

“It was a good win and a good tournament for us to play in,” Pasadena Coach Tim Tucker said. “We like playing against the best competition in state and this is excellent preparation for Pacific League play and a long run in CIF.”

Bulldogs senior guard Blake Hamilton scored a team-high 12 points and was named the tournament most valuable player after averaging 14 point per game.

“The competition was pretty good out here, but our coaches prepare the same way every game, regardless of who we played,” Hamilton said. “Now, we’re ready for Pacific League play.”

Ajon Efferson scored 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team as was junior forward Brandon Jolly, who scored eight points. John Hayward also scored 10 points and Perris Hicks added eight points.

Pasadena went 4-0 in the tournament and knocked off Downey (54-47), Otay Ranch (69-42) and The Bishops (80-39) en route to the title.

Marshall Fundamental in the San Pedro Tournament: The Eagles (7-8) captured the consolation championship by defeating South East, 71-59, on Friday afternoon at San Pedro High.

Sophomore guard Kaylin Banks scored a game-high 28 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Marshall picked up wins in the tournament versus Community Harvest (71-67) and New Millennium (61-44) while losing to South Torrance.

San Marino in the Phoenix Cactus Jam Tournament: The Titans (8-5) finished their tournament run 1-2, but notched a 65-61 victory over Estrella Foothills of Goodyear, Ariz. in the seventh-place game Friday afternoon.

San Marino was missing two players with the stomach flu, while four others played despite illness.

In spite of that, Titans senior guard Jordon Dang scored a career-high 22 points, while hitting four of six three-pointers. Andrew Martinez added 12 points, while Kyle Ezhold and Jaspar Hwang scored 11 points apiece.

San Marino previously dropped contests to Eastlake of Sammamish, Wash., 73-60, and 56-25 to Scottsdale Christian Academy of Phoenix on Tuesday evening.

La Salle 42, La Cañada 40: The Spartans fell to the Lancers for the second time this year in consolation bracket play of the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic on Thursday night.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Pasadena Poly in the West Coast Holiday Classic: The Panthers (9-4) finished 3-2 in the week-long tournament and dropped the ninth-place game and tournament finale on Friday afternoon, 42-36, to Saugus.

Panthers senior guard Michelle Miller concluded the tournament by tallying 18 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks while Courtney Foster added nine points and Kiki Yang contributed seven points.

With her 17 points, Miller has scored 2, 788 career points and is 10 points behind Michelle Palmisano of Thousand Oaks for eighth all-time on the CIF Southern Section scoring list.

Poly picked up three wins in the tournament over Marymount (60-28), Arlington (44-31) and Burbank (53-45) while losing to Norco (54-49).

Miller finished with 118 points and 79 rebounds in five tournament games.

Arcadia 52, La Cañada 31: The Spartans took fourth place in the La Cañada New Year’s Ball Tournament after falling in the third-place game Friday night. Courtney Chen had a team-high 14 points and Sydney Zarate had 13 rebounds and four blocks for La Cañada.

La Cañada missed out on a shot in the tournament’s championship in a 58-53 loss to Hart Thursday. Chen had a game-high 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds for La Cañada. Micaela Anderson had a game-high 16 rebounds and 12 points for the Spartans.

BOYS’ SOCCER

La Salle in the La Cañada Holiday Classic: The Lancers (7-2-2) closed out pool play Thursday afternoon with a 1-1 tie versus Pioneer.

Lancers senior midfielder Sam Zanetta scored his first goal of the season off an assist by Diego Barriga. Goalie Garrett Kubon finished with five saves.

La Cañada 4, Golden Valley 0: Armand Bagramyan and Jeff Becker both scored two goals for La Cañada on Thursday in a pool-play game in the 33rd annual La Cañada Holiday Classic. Bagramyan also had an assist and Carlos Ruano had two assists of his own for the Spartans.

It was the first points of the tournament for La Cañada after it fell to Millikan, 3-0, Wednesday. The Spartans (6-4-1) will play in the tournament’s fifth-place game Friday at 2:30 p.m. versus La Salle (7-1-1).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Chapman University 66, Caltech 44: A late 15-2 first-half run spurred the Chapman men’s basketball team to a win over Caltech on Thursday afternoon at the Braun Athletic Center in nonconference play.

Beavers junior Ethan Boroson converted a lay-up from a Bryan Joel pass to nudge Caltech (4-5) in front 22-15 with 5:37 left in the first half before Chapman went on its run and never looked back.

Andrew Hogue led Caltech with 13 points.
