Spartans start strong

SOFTBALL

La Canada 7, Nogales 2: The defending CIF Southern Section Division V champions began their season on Tuesday with a win at the San Dimas Tournament, led by All-Area catcher Catherine Horner.

Horner went three for three with four runs batted in, a home run and a triple.

Alyssa Stolmack also went yard for the Spartans, knocking in two runs and scoring twice. Jessica Ogden added a pair of hits, including a double, a run and a RBI. Katy Lee also had two runs.

In the circle, Lauren Cox went the distance, allowing three hits, a walk and striking out 11.

Viewpoint 9, Flintridge Prep 4: The Rebels are still searching for their first win, having dropped to 0-5 with Tuesday’s nonleague home loss.

Drew Montgomery had three hits for Prep and Maya Okamoto added two hits, two runs and a stolen base.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

St. Francis 3, Alemany 0: Charles McCarthy contributed 11 kills and Michael Bacall added 10 on Tuesday to lead the visiting Golden Knights to a 25-9, 25-21, 25-23 Mission League win. Wesley Coffey registered nine kills for St. Francis (5-1, 2-1 in league) and Collin Peterson had 10 digs.

Temple City 3, Flintridge Prep 1: The Rebels lost on the road in nonleague play, 25-16, 24-26, 25-11, 25-11, on Tuesday. Kory Hamane had 10 kills and Karim Ismail added six blocks for the Rebels (2-3).

BOYS’ GOLF

Milken Community 226, Flintridge Prep 228: The host Rebels fell Tuesday in their season and Prep League opener at Altadena Golf Course. Jack Bouchard of Flintridge Prep carded a two-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors.
