Chen makes All-CIF cut

Stopping Courtney Chen was key to beating the La Cañada High girls’ basketball team this season.

It was easier said than done as the point guard emerged as the Spartans’ deadliest offensive player this season.

It wasn’t lost on the coaches who voted for the All-CIF Southern Section Division III-A teams, as Chen was selected to the first team after leading La Cañada to the quarterfinals as a sophomore.

“Of course I think [Chen] is an All-CIF player and the other coaches saw it, too,” said La Cañada Coach Tamar Hill, whose team finished 16-12. “She worked hard all season long.”

Chen averaged 15.3 points 4.1 assists, 3.6 steals — all team-highs — and 5.1 rebounds a game this year.

“The other teams were scouting [Chen] to find how to stop her and even with that pressure she could play her game,” Hill said. “Everyone knew she was the player to stop and she still got it done.”
