BOYS’ WATER POLO

La Cañada in South Coast Tournament: The Spartans had a tough draw early on in tournament play Thursday. La Cañada won convincingly over Villa Park in the first round, 18-7, but was defeated handily by Mater Dei, the No. 1 team in CIF Southern Section Division I, 25-7, at Servite High.

Symeon Stefan led La Cañada with a team-high five goals against Villa Park, while Chase Borisoff added four more scores in a standout performance. The Spartans were no match for the Monarchs, who have won CIF Division titles the past four years and have a CIF Southern Section winning streak more than 50 games long according to OCVarsity.com.

“It’s definitely one of the top two or three tournaments and probably the best in high school water polo, to be honest,” La Cañada Coach Devon Borisoff said. “We can go into tournaments up by us and win, but I don’t want to play a tournament championship against a team I know we can beat. We have always entered into these tournaments and we know we probably won’t win them, but it’s a great experience.”

The Spartans (3-1) continue tournament play Friday at 6 p.m. when they face the loser of Thursday night’s Long Beach Wilson-El Toro match.

Flintridge Prep 8, Carpinteria 5: Ethan Vandeventer finished with three goals, four steals and two assists for the Rebels (5-4) in a pool-play match of the Malibu Tournament at Malibu High. Flintridge Prep then suffered an 11-5 pool-play defeat against Malibu. Vandeventer collected three goals.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Daniella Motte also finished with 13 kills for the Rebels, who dropped to 0-3 in the Prep League and 3-5 overall.
