SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tologs topple league champs

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 1: Flintridge Sacred Heart recorded its biggest win of the season, as it got 27 digs from Colleen Degnan and 10 kills from Maddie Peterson to earn a 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18 Mission League road victory Tuesday. Notre Dame, which won the league title last season, entered the match ranked eighth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division I-A poll.

“We shocked the world, and we got contributions from everybody,” said Tologs Coach Ernest Banaag, who got eight kills from Sophia Coffey. “I think we have turned the corner and are heading in the right direction.”

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy improved to 5-8, 2-2 in league.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

La Cañada 25, Monrovia 4: After an intense match Saturday, the Spartans were able to clear their bench in a Rio Hondo League victory over the Wildcats at home Tuesday.

Chase Borisoff recorded a match-high in goals (five) and assists (six) for La Cañada, which received three goals each from Bryce Hopkins, Symeon Stefan and Johnny Louk. Sam Davidson and Connor Shankweiler had two goals each for the Spartans, who saw Charlie Depew and Justin Ho record the first varsity goals of their career.

La Cañada (11-6) also had eight saves from goalkeeper Jeff Lee.

The win came on the heels of a dramatic one-goal victory, 11-10, over Mira Costa Saturday in a CIF Southern Section Division III showdown. The Spartans pulled out the win to remain atop the Division III standings over the third-ranked Mustangs.

After trailing, 10-6, with 5:38 to go, Mira Costa pushed to within one, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer or winner.

The Spartans had a balanced performance Borisoff leading the way again with four assists, two goals and five drawn ejections. Louk (two goals, three assists), Hopkins (two goals, five ejections) and Stefan (three goals, one assist) all contributed in the win.

GIRLS’ GOLF

La Cañada in Pacific League prelims: The Spartans finished third in league during a league match Monday at La Cañada Country Club. The Spartans finished with a 228, edging San Marino by 12 strokes and advancing to the CIF playoffs.

Melissa Leo led La Cañada with a three-over-par 37.

The league’s individual final will be held at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at Brookside Golf Course No. 1 in Pasadena. Leo, Kim and Bessho will compete in the finals.

Harvard-Westlake 200, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 250: The Tologs fell Tuesday in a Mission League home match at Eaton Canyon Golf Course. Presley Maron shot a 49 for the Tologs’ team best.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 14, Chaminade 4: The host Tologs picked up a Mission League win Tuesday at Fremont Tennis Center.

Pasadena Poly 11, Flintridge Prep 7: Abby Letts and Young-In Kim teamed up to sweep, losing just two games, in a Prep League match at Caltech on Tuesday.
