SPORTS ROUNDUP: Armand Bagramyan¿s history-making effort marred by cards
BOYS’ SOCCER
La Cañada 5, San Marino 0: Armand Bagramyan made history Tuesday. La Cañada’s senior forward scored two goals to give him 42 on the season and break La Cañada’s single-season scoring record of 41, which was previously held by Josh Henderson.
The day was marred, though, as Bagramyan drew two yellow cards, which resulted in a red card, in the game. It means he won’t be able to play in the Spartans’ regular-season finale at South Pasadena Thursday, which will decide the league champion.
Bagramyan said on each yellow card — with the second coming in about the final 10 minutes of the game — a San Marino player hit him, he “retaliated” and the Titans weren’t carded.
“I just sort of leaned into him both times,” said Bagramyan, who also had two assists in the game. “They took that as a yellow card for some reason and I don’t know why. He clearly hit me both times and had been hitting me all game.”
Austin Gartside, Armaan Zare and Lawrence Ku also scored in the win for La Cañada (18-3-1, 8-1 in Rio Hondo League).
The Spartans also defeated Temple City, 6-1, Friday behind a Bagramyan hat trick. Gartside added a goal and two assists for the Spartans, whose final goals came from Andrew Meeker (one assist) and Aidan Tourani. Shant Hairapetian added two helpers for La Cañada.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 4, St. Francis 0: A trip to the playoffs still hangs in the balance for St. Francis after it fell on its home pitch Monday — its fourth game in a row being shut out. The Golden Knights fell to 6-10-5, 4-6-1 in the Mission League. On Friday, St. Francis suffered a 2-0 league road loss against Harvard-Westlake.
Flintridge Prep 1, Pasadena Poly 1: Goalkeeper Clayton Weirick made three saves Friday for the Rebels in a Prep League match.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
San Marino 3, La Cañada 2: Thanks to two goals from Jordyn Duncan and assists from Kelly Crowley and Hayley Thompson, the Titans picked up a big Rio Hondo League home win Thursday afternoon.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1, Notre Dame 0: The Tologs wrapped up second place in the Mission League and kept their hopes for sharing a league crown in tact with Monday’s win on the road.
Savannah Viola scored on a corner kick in the second minute to lead Sacred Heart (15-1-3, 7-1-1) to its fifth consecutive win.
The win, coupled with Chaminade’s tie with Alemany on Monday, ensures the Tologs will finish no lower than second place in the league standings. Harvard-Westlake defeated Louisville on Monday to clinch a share of the league title. The Tologs finish their league season Wednesday at Chaminade with a victory giving them a share of the league title.
Flintridge Prep 3, Webb 0: Kaelin King finished with two goals and Katherine Pinney added one on Monday to spark the host Rebels in a Prep League match. Whitney Cohen registered two assists for Flintridge Prep.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
St. Francis 43, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 31: Behind a game-high 15 points from sophomore Kyle Leufroy and a solid team defensive effort, the Golden Knights improved to 14-12, 4-7 in Mission League on their home floor Monday.
Noah Willerford and Markar Agakanian also scored nine and eight points, respectively, for St. Francis, which also got seven points and nine rebounds from Evan Crawford.
Leufroy finished with a team-high 25 points Friday to spark the visiting Golden Knights to a 65-55 league victory. Crawford collected 13 points.
Flintridge Prep 74, Rio Hondo Prep 67: Three Rebels finished in double figures Friday night with Jedrick Eugenio scoring a team-high 19, followed closely by Robert Cartwright and Kareem Ismail, who added 18 and 15 points, respectively.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Flintridge Prep 52, Rio Hondo Prep 38: Talia Ismail and Lacy Coan paced the Rebels on the road Friday with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Flintridge Prep improved to 15-5, 8-1 in the Prep League with the win.
La Cañada 60, Temple City 47: Courtney Chen and Amber Graves led the Spartans to a Rio Hondo League road win Friday night with 22 and 15 points, respectively. Sarah Borland added eight points for La Cañada, which improved to 16-8, 7-1 in league.
Louisville 54, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 32: Dana Budzyn had nine points Thursday for the host Tologs in a Mission League game. Casey Johnson and Jenna Tran had six points each for Flintridge Sacred Heart (9-15, 0-8 in league).
