SOFTBALL

La Cañada 6, Monrovia 5: The Spartans needed a walk-off double from Aubri Thompson, who went three-for-three after getting hit in the face with a ground ball earlier in the game, to win its Rio Hondo League opener with the Wildcats on Friday night at La Cañada High.

“This was the not the last we’ve heard of Monrovia,” La Cañada Coach KC Mathews said. “It was a big Friday night under the lights. The crowd was great and our girls never gave up. They were down and they’re not used to that, but they came through. We just didn’t quit and that’s part of what good teams do.”

La Cañada (5-1) trailed 4-0 after the top of the third inning, but scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead before Monrovia tied it in the top of the seventh.

Katy Lee (two for four, two runs) singled aboard with one out to start the Spartans’ offense going in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Annie Monroe was hit by a pitch and Thompson ended the game with a double to right-center field to score Lee and end the game.

“She had a great game and she executed her plan,” Mathews said of Thompson. “She had a plan every time she went to the plate and she executed it every time.”

La Cañada had 10 hits. Kelsey Drange, Olivia Leyva, Monroe, Olivia Lam and Selina Mohr (double) each logged hits. Junior pitcher Maddy MacKenzie tossed the complete-game victory for the Spartans after giving up three earned runs.
