SPORTS ROUNDUP: La Cañada boys’ swimming dominates Temple City

BOYS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada 145, Temple City 45: The Spartans improved to 3-0 in their Rio Hondo League opener at Temple City Thursday. La Cañada dominated, winning every event on the day.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Temple City 86, La Cañada 84: It all came down to the final race of Thursday’s Rio Hondo League opener at Temple City.

While the Spartans received standout, multi-win efforts from Sammy Campbell and Rachel Wong, they still fell at Temple City’s pool.

“It was a great effort today, losing by two,” said La Cañada assistant swim coach Meg Patrick, who helps head up the girls’ team. “It came down to the last relay. … It’s a rebuilding year.”

La Cañada needed to take first and second or third in the final relay event to win, but Temple City took first and third to seal the win.

Campbell won the 500-yard freestyle relay in five minutes 43.11 seconds and 100 backstroke. Wong took the 100 free in 1:00.09 and 50 free for La Cañada (1-2), which also got a win in the 200 free from Sarah Hughes.

The Spartans’ 200-freestyle relay team of Shelby Hopkins, Megan Arnold, Wong and Caitlyn Seto was also victorious in 3:32.40. Hopkins also took second in the 500 free in 5:57.08.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade 3, St. Francis 1: Visiting St. Francis saw Chaminade record a 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 Mission League win Friday. David Thompson finished with 35 assists for St. Francis (4-7, 1-6 in league). Charles McCarthy added 21 points for the Golden Knights, who got 16 from Chris Thompson.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Harvard-Westlake 17, St. Francis 1: The host Golden Knights got a singles win from Kristian Estebe in a Mission League match at Fremont Tennis Center. St. Francis fell to 6-5, 2-2 in league.

BOYS’ GOLF

La Cañada 170, Temple City 249: The Spartans’ scoring five were all within three strokes of each other in another dominating performance at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club Thursday.

La Cañada improved to 8-0, 2-0 in the Rio Hondo League with Collin Morikawa and Joshua Suh sharing medalist honors with 33s each. The Spartans also received 34s from Robby Stehlin and Daniel Rhee and a 36 from Colin Kreditor.

Temple City’s lowest scorer was Kevin Chan with a 40.

SOFTBALL

Webb 12, Flintridge Prep 5: The Rebels committed six errors in their Prep League-opening home loss on Friday, falling to 1-5 in the process.

Drew Montgomery had seven strikeouts in the circle and also had two hits, four runs batted in and a run. Ashley Kim also had a pair of hits, a stolen base and a run.
