BOYS’ TENNIS
La Cañada High in Rio Hondo League Individual Tournament: Hoping to push a team into a championship appearance, La Cañada High Coach Will Moravec loaded up his doubles, combining his top two singles players — Joshua Kim and Ryan Lee — in one doubles team.
The risk didn’t pay off, as all of La Cañada’s competitors were eliminated by the second round Monday at Live Oak Park in Temple City.
“Joshua and Ryan didn’t really get close against the San Marino singles guys this year,” Moravec said of the team’s league matches with San Marino. “It’s Josh’s senior year, we wanted to try to get him to the CIF Individual Tournament. We thought putting them together was a possible way to get them there.”
Kim and Lee opened with an 8-0 victory of Monrovia’s Nikko Cabal and Ryan Nguyen, but met their match in Temple City’s Johnny Wang and Chris Lai, 8-5, in the second round.
La Cañada’s doubles team of Liwon Lim and Joe Song came just as close to advancing to the semifinals and the second day of the tournament against the No. 1 seed. Lim and Song opened with a narrow win over Temple City’s Harvey Gan and Brian Wei, 8-8 (8-6), and then fell to top-seeded Robert Carter and Daniel Gealer of San Marino, 8-5.
The Spartans’ third and final pairing of Leeho Lim and Harrison Zuk knocked off Monrovia’s Mark Gauderman and Sam Arrieta in the first round, 8-2, and then fell to San Marino’s Mark Lew and Timothy Duong, 8-4.
In singles, La Cañada’s Chris Madsen and Pat Finnagin each won a match Monday. Madsen defeated Temple City’s Kirby Jou, 8-5, before falling to Monrovia’s Robert Pedroza, 8-4. Finnagin opened with a win over Alex Yam of Temple City, 8-3, and was then knocked out by San Marino’s Vincent Cheng, 8-2.
BOYS’ GOLF
St. Francis 195, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 218: Johnny Brandt and Nathan Han carded one-over-par 37s on Tuesday to lead the visiting Golden Knights in a Mission League match at Braemar Country Club and clinch a postseason berth. Vince De Pinto and Michael Mozilo each had 40s for St. Francis (9-7, 7-4 in league).
St. Francis 385, Crescenta Valley 417: Vince De Pinto of St. Francis and Crescenta Valley’s Paul Park each carded five-over-par 75s on Monday to share medalist honors in a nonleague match at Brookside Golf Course No. 2. Joe Sarni added a 76 for St. Francis.
Webb 191, Flintridge Prep 218: Jack Bouchard finished with a three-over-par 38 on Monday for the Rebels in a Prep League match at Marshall Canyon Golf Course. Flintridge Prep, which finished 7-7, 0-6 in league, received a 39 from Dylan Colliflower.
BASEBALL
Temple City 7, La Cañada 1: The Spartans slipped to 11-6, 6-3 in the Rio Hondo League with a road loss Tuesday. Having played one more game than second-place Monrovia, La Cañada still holds onto first place in league and will host Temple City Friday at 3:30 p.m.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Harvard-Westlake 3, St. Francis 2: Charles McCarthy finished with 24 kills for the visiting Golden Knights, who saw the Wolverines post a 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 18-25, 16-14 Mission League win Tuesday. St. Francis (5-10, 1-8 in league) got 33 assists from David Thompson and 15 kills and 12 assists from Chris Thompson.
Harvard-Westlake 18, St. Francis 0: Visiting St. Francis fell Tuesday in a Mission League match at L.A. Valley College to dip to 8-8, 4-5 in league.
