Led by Amber Park, locals take part in Ojai tournament

Amber Park of La Cañada left her mark on the 113th Ojai Valley Junior Tournament.

Seeded fourth in the girls’ 18 singles draw, Park advanced to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday morning before succumbing to second-seeded Meredith Xepoleas in a tough match, 6-4, 6-4.

Park opened up play on Thursday in the girls’ 18 singles draw, getting a bye into the round of 32, where she ousted Jennifer Hu of Cypress, 6-1, 6-1.

On Friday morning, Park swept through Alice Li of Ojai, 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals later Friday, Park had another seemingly easy go of it, sweeping sixth-seeded Honami Yazawa of Ojai, 6-1, 6-1.

In CIF boys singles, La Cañada High’s Joshua Kim opened up impressively on Thursday morning.

In the round of 64, he prevailed in a see-saw battle with Cerritos’ Anderson Ju to prevail, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. But on Friday morning, lost another tough match to Gregory Lyon of Coronado, 7-6, 6-3.

The Spartans’ doubles contingent of Leeho Lim and Harrizon Zuk fell in the first round of CIF boys doubles, losing to Corona del Mar’s Joshua Kliger and Carson Williams, 6-0, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.

In the girls’ open 14 draw, La Cañada resident Lauren Park withdrew due to illness in the opening round Thursday against Tammy Van of Garden Grove.
