GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

La Cañada at Rio Hondo League Finals: Sonja Cwik had the best performance Friday night at South Pasadena High. The senior won her first league title since her sophomore year with a time of 11 minutes, 26.84 seconds in the 3,200-meter run.

Cwik said she didn’t expect to win with South Pasadena’s Helena Van Loan, who’d defeated her earlier in the 1,600. Van Loan was slowed by an injury to her calf in the race and finished fourth (11:46.81).

“It feels really good, I am happy I could do it in my senior year,” said Cwik, who went on to explain her focus for the race. “You have to speed up because it feels like you’re going the same speed when you’re actually slowing down. I just said, ‘I’ll just try that, see what happens and hopefully I won’t die.’ I guess I didn’t.”

Cwik also advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division III preliminaries with a runner-up finish in the 1,600 (5:18.25), just being edged by Van Loan. She’ll be joined by teammate Anna Frederich in that race (5:37.77, third).

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

La Cañada at Rio Hondo League Finals: Graham Miketta nearly nabbed a league title for the Spartans Friday at South Pasadena High. The junior took second in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.82 seconds, just being edged by .29 of a second by South Pasadena’s Hector Fernandez (42.53).

The time was good enough to send Miketta onto the CIF Southern Section Division III prelims.

The Spartans also advanced their 4x400-relay team of Spencer Fraire, Mario Del Cueto, Andrew Meeker and Emory Chesley (3:38.73, third).
