SPORTS ROUNDUP: La Cañada High, Flintridge Sacred Heart qualify to swim finals

BOYS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada in CIF Southern Section Division I prelims: The Spartans’ Brandon Nguyen moved onto the championship finals of the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley with fourth and fifth-place finishes in 57.05 seconds and 1:51.70, respectively.

The division I finals will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. With the top-nine finishers in each race Thursday swimming in championship races Saturday and the 10th to 18th swimmers taking part in a consolation final. The 19th and 20th-place finishers are alternates.

Garrett Chin also moved onto the championship 100 backstroke final after taking seventh in 51.34 in the prelims.

The Spartans 200-medley relay team of Garrett Chin, Nguyen, Symeon Stefan and Peter Loakes also took eighth in 1:35.61.

Dane Bell also took 11th in the 500 freestyle in 4:33.57. Matt Varraveto was 17th in the race (4:37.55) for the Spartans.

Chin also took 12th in the individual medley (1:53.56). Loakes took 15th in the 50 free (21.65) and earned alternate status in the 100 free (20th, 47.34). Chin, Bell, Loakes and Nguyen also took 15th in the 400-freestyle relay (3:11.08).

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, La Cañada in CIF Southern Section Division I prelims: Kirsten Vose put herself in a good position to win her first CIF title Thursday at Riverside City College. The sophomore won both her preliminary races in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke in respective times of 2:03.47 and and 1:03.27.

The division I finals will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. With the top-nine finishers in each race Thursday swimming in championship races Saturday and the 10th to 18th swimmers taking part in a consolation final. The 19th and 20th-place finishers are alternates.

Vose also teamed with Emily Balog, Katie Altmayer and Kate Herrill for a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay in 1:45.50. That same group also took third in the 200-freestyle relay (1:36.27).

Herrill also qualified for the 50 freestyle (23.93) and breaststroke (eighth, 1:04.97) championship races, taking eighth in both.

Altmayer also qualified for the consolation heat in the 100 butterfly (11th, 57.38) and 200 free (13th, 1:52.86). Balog snuck into a consolation race in the breaststroke (18th, 1:07.42) and earned alternate status in the individual medley (19th, 2:10.63).

La Canada’s Samantha Campbell just missed the alternate cut, taking 21st in the 100 backstroke (59.61).
