Sports Roundup: La Cañada High boys’ basketball, soccer open tournaments with victories
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
La Cañada 61, Gabrielino 52: The Spartans opened bracket play of the San Gabriel Valley Classic Tournament with a victory on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans (7-2) will play on Fridy at 6 p.m. at Monrovia High against either Notre Dame or Santa Rosa Academy.
Sophomore guard Grant Arthur scored a team-high 17 points, while Danny Jun chipped in 15 points, Kuko Kurdoghlian added 12 points and Alec Baktamian chipped in eight points.
St. Francis 70, Franklin 42: Kyle Leufroy led the way with 17 points as the Golden Knights opened up bracket play of the San Gabriel Valley Classic Tournament with a win on Thursday evening.
Evan Crawford added 13 points and Noah Willerford chipped in 12 points for St. Francis (8-2), which next plays on Friday at 7:30 p.m. versus either Ayala or Monrovia.
BOYS’ SOCCER
La Cañada 4, Moorpark 0: Lawence Ku, Filipp Franke, Andrew Meeker and George Baydian each scored a goal Thursday to spark the Spartans (5-1-2) in an opening-round match of the La Cañada Tournament.
Meeker also tallied two assists, while Keivan Meshkat added an assist and goalie Graham Labran-Boyd finished with two saves.
The Spartans next host Pioneer on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Flintridge Prep in Ontario Christian Tournament: The Rebels went 1-1 in opening day action of the Ontario Christian Christmas Classic on Thursday.
Flintridge Prep opened with a 3-2 victory over Murrieta Calvary thanks in part to a goal and assist from senior forward Cole Rademacher, while Henry Griffith and Michael Weinstein added goals.
The victory came despite the Rebels only having 12 players suited.
A little later in the afternoon, Flintridge (6-3) fell versus Arrowhead Christian, 3-0.
The Rebels are back in action Thursday at noon against an opponent to be determined.
