Sports Roundup: La Cañada High nets big wins in Rio Hondo League opening day

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 51, South Pasadena 47: The Spartans’ goal of reclaiming a Rio Hondo League championship took a positive first step as La Cañada held on for a league home victory Wednesday evening.

The Spartans improved to 11-5 in notching the triumph in the opening game of league play, while coach Tom Hofman picked up win No. 601.

St. Francis 54. Crespi 48: Kyle Leufroy finished with 24 points and Noah Willerford added 18 on Wednesday to lead the visiting Golden Knights to their first Mission League win.

“Kyle continues to display his shooting skills and Noah made some big outside shots,” said St. Francis co-Coach Ray O’Brien, whose team improved to 11-5, 1-2 in league. “We are starting to get the offense that we expected in the beginning of the year.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Cañada 4, South Pasadena 0: The Spartans continued their winning ways, opening up Rio Hondo League play with a bang in a road victory Wednesday afternoon.

With the win the Spartans improved to 10-0 and will next travel to Monrovia on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 5, Louisville 0: Flintridge Sacred Heart dominated en route to its first Mission League win of the season on Wednesday at Occidental College.

Nia Harris, Dylan Harrow, Sophia Saldivar, Sarah Vail and Casey Basso all had goals for the Tologs (7-4-1, 1-2 in league), with assists coming from Heather Turcios and Jenna Farac.

Dani Garcia notched the shutout in net with three saves.
