Sports Roundup: Spartans get wins in boys’ volleyball, softball

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada 3, Gabrielino 1: The Spartans opened Rio Hondo League play with a come-from-behind 19-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Mel Schroeder led La Cañada (6-5, 1-0) with 17 kills, while Connor Walbrecht added nine kills and two aces and Noah Goldstein contributed eight kills.

Jeff Lee paced the defense with five blocks, while Connor Belcher tallied 19 digs.

SOFTBALL

La Cañada 11, 14, Village Christian 1, 1: The Spartans easily cruised to a doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon at home in nonleague action.

With the victories, the Spartans improved to 9-3 and will next face Burbank in a doubleheader on April 5.

Olivia Lam had a night to remember, finishing eight for eight combined that accounted for seven RBI, three runs scored and three doubles.

Brenna Gay was five for seven with two runs and two RBI, Katy Lee was four for six with three RBI and three runs and Sammy Jedry was three for five with three runs and two RBI.
