Sports Roundup: La Cañada High boys’ volleyball falls in thriller

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

San Marino 3, La Cañada 2: The Spartans fell in a thrilling Rio Hondo League road match on Thursday afternoon 23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-15, 15-12.

Sophomore outside hitter Mel Schroeder finished with 16 kills, while Noah Goldstein tallied 15 kills and Connor Walbrecht and Trent Bauer added eight kills.

Libero Connor Belcher also totaled 15 digs for the Spartans (6-6, 1-1 in league).

“It was a crazy match, real back and forth,” Spartans Coach Otto Lacayo said. “You get that in league with two young teams who are battling for a playoff spot.”

La Cañada next hosts Temple City on Tuesday.

Flintridge Prep 3, Pasadena Poly 0: Despite a strong challenge from the host Panthers, the Rebels secured a 25-20, 29-27, 27-25 Prep League victory on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore outside hitter Dante Fergoso led the Rebels (11-4, 3-0 in league) in victory by scoring a match-high 26 kills and tallying 19 digs.

Rebels senior middle blocker Trip Westmoreland totaled 13 kills and six blocks, while Kyle Law added 11 kills and 19 digs and libero Zack Picker finished with 10 digs.

“The league is a lot closer this year than it’s been in previous years,” Rebels Coach Sean Beattie said. “I expected a battle here like I expect one against Chadwick next Tuesday.”

Loyola 3, St. Francis 0: David Thompson finished with 18 kills on Thursday for the host Golden Knights, who saw Loyola post a 25-10, 25-13, 25-13 Mission League win. St. Francis fell to 6-6, 3-5 in league.

SOFTBALL

Pasadena Poly 9, Flintridge Prep 4: The Rebels fell Thursday in a Prep League game. Flintridge Prep (3-10, 0-5 in league) received a double and an RBI from Julie Yi.

BOYS’ GOLF

St. Francis 179, Crespi 214: Michael Mozilo shot a two-under-par 33 to earn medalist honors in Wednesday’s Mission League match at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena. Johnny Brandt fired a 35 for the Golden Knights, who improved to 7-4, 5-3 in league. Michael Finney added a 36 for St. Francis, which received a 37 from Nathan Han and a 38 from Eric Lin.

Buckley 197, Flintridge Prep 213: The visiting Rebels received a one-under-par 35 from Jonah Sacks in a Prep League match Thursday at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys. The Rebels dipped to 6-3, 0-3 in league.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Loyola 15, St. Francis 3: The host Golden Knights suffered a Mission League defeat at Fremont Tennis Center on Thursday. St. Francis is 11-3, 5-3 in league.

La Cañada 18, Monrovia 0: The Spartans rolled to a Rio Hondo League road victory Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, La Cañada improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in league.
