Curtis plans to pursue reelection to dais

Hoping to complete some of the good work that’s been started since he came to the City Council nearly four years ago, La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Jon Curtis said he will seek reelection when his term expires in March.

Elected to the council in 2013, after five years on the Planning Commission, Curtis throws his hat into the ring alongside fellow incumbent Dave Spence, who announced last week plans to run for a seventh term.

“I always take things one step at a time, so wasn’t necessarily planning for multiple terms,” the mayor said Tuesday. “But there’s a lot more I’d like to finish up.”

Identified areas of focus include: the potential acquisition of the former Sport Chalet headquarters in the Town Center; development of an international sister cities program; representing the city in advocating against construction of a 710 Freeway tunnel; and the possible transfer of homes in the city’s western “Sagebrush” area from Glendale Unified to La Cañada Unified School District borders.

“There are a lot of things currently in progress for the betterment of the city I’d like to continue to work on and see through,” he said.

Curtis said he’d like to continue encouraging municipal transparency and bringing his experience as an attorney specializing in real estate investment and land use to bear during his time on the council. He also hopes to further develop relationships he’s built with area agencies and institutions through his service on the city’s Joint Use Committee with LCUSD and the Southern California Assn. of Governments, among others.

“It takes a little while to develop those relationships, and I’m starting to do that,” he said.

Two City Council seats — those filled by Curtis and Spence — are open in the March 2017 election. The filing period begins in November. For more information visit www.lcf.ca.gov.
