Grace Fontes, a seventh-grade student at St. Bede the Venerable Elementary School, was the regional winner in the American history essay contest sponsored by Daughters of the American Revolution that invited entries from across the nation.

The Don Jose Verdugo Chapter of DAR named Grace its first-place winner for “her imaginative essay describing an American colonial family’s reaction to a major turning point in our nation’s history, the Stamp Act of 1765,” according to chapter officials. Her essay was then entered into the District level of the competition, where it placed second in her grade-level division.

The annual contest is held to encourage students to think in creative ways about America’s history.
