Religion Briefs: Warmans to speak on marriage

A couple with more than 40 years of pastoral and counseling ministry will address the next meeting of the Growing Families seminar class, planned for 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 at La Cañada Presbyterian Church.
Marv and Joyce Warman will speak on the subject of “The Marriage Adventure.” Marv Warman is a La Cañada-based licensed marriage and family therapist. Joyce Warman is a voice, piano and theory instructor. The couple have served on pastoral staff with Evangelical Free Churches and Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, their home church, where they teach parenting classes and a premarital series.
They are the founders of Warm an’ Loving Ministries, offering personal counseling, seminars and workshops. The Warmans also co-wrote with Bill and Martha Sears “Parent Project: Tools For Godly Parenting.”
The Growing Families program at La Cañada Presbyterian is open to parents and grandparents and meets monthly in the church’s Fellowship Hall. The church campus is located at 626 Foothill Blvd.
LCCC service to have ‘Promise’
The sermon topic “The Promise” will be addressed this Sunday, Feb. 21 by the Rev. Skip Lindeman at La Cañada Congregational Church.
The worship service gets underway at 10 a.m. and will also feature Handel’s anthem “Glory to the King” sung by the Chancel Choir.
Visitors are welcome and invited to stay for the coffee hour that follows the service.

Jack Lantz Trio to lead off Jazz Vespers
Jazz Vespers in the Chapel will debut at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in the Cook Prayer Chapel at La Cañada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd.
The Jack Lantz Trio will perform the first program in the series, playing and improvising on a wide range of familiar hymns and sacred music. Lantz, the church’s director of Worship Arts, will play piano, joined by Nick Morabito on bass and Dave Marks on drums.
“The musical style, setting and simple liturgy will provide a calm way to finish Sunday afternoon and prepare ourselves for the challenges of the week ahead,” Lantz said in a statement. “We invite the community to join us for an extraordinary celebration of joy, energy, meditation and liberation.”
Admission is free, although a free-will offering will be received. No reservations are required, and the public is welcome.

Powell to speak at La Cañada United Methodist Church
The Rev. Jim Powell, who last July became the superintendent of the North District of the California-Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church, will be in the pulpit at the Methodist church in La Cañada this Sunday, Feb. 21.
Powell, who was appointed to the position by Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, will lead the 10:30 a.m. worship service at the local campus on Berkshire Place. Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from San Diego State University, a master of divinity degree from Candler School of Theology in Atlanta and has completed advanced studies in church leadership at Southern Methodist University. He was the longtime senior pastor at Palmdale United Methodist Church prior to becoming superintendent.
La Cañada United Methodist offers child care and early elementary Sunday school during the worship service. Youth Ministry is held at noon.
On Wednesdays beginning at 10:30 a.m., the local church offers Bible study and intercessory prayer.
