Members of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada, together with youths involved with Kiwanis-sponsored Builders and Key clubs, picked up paintbrushes on Saturday, April 2, to take on some touching-up tasks at the Community Center on Chevy Chase Drive.

It was all part of Kiwanis One Day, which invites its clubs around the world to unite in a day of service, according to a news release issued Friday.

“Kiwanis One Day gives our service clubs around the world the opportunity to work together on one day, proving that our global service organization can make a difference in communities around the world,” stated Al Magee, community service director for the group, in the release. “Kiwanis estimates that nearly one million hours will be donated to service projects ranging from sprucing up playgrounds and parks to painting buildings to planting trees and flowers.”

Maureen Bond, executive director of the Community Center stated that the work project improved class spaces at the facility. “It’s also fun knowing that while we’re making a difference in our community, Kiwanis clubs around the world also are making a difference in their communities,” she added.

Bridge Club seeks new members

The Bridge Club at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge has recently seen a shift in leadership after its longtime coordinator, Malak Peterman, passed away in January.

Edward L. McDermott has taken the helm of the club, which is a cornerstone in the center’s senior programming, McDermott and other club members are looking for more residents of the Foothills who are experienced bridge players to join their group. Meeting times are 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Community Center, 4469 Chevy Chase Drive. All players bring their lunch and sometimes additional treats to share.

“We are really thankful that another member has stepped up to take over the responsibilities of something so positive and fun for others,” said Maureen Bond, executive director of the Community Center. “The Bridge Club is very welcoming and all the players have a passion for the game and are very thankful they have a place to meet, play bridge, and develop new friendships.”
