We're tracking races across the country. Polls closed Tuesday but ballot counting continues. Races are called by the Associated Press using vote returns and other data. However, certified results will not be available until all mail-in and conditional ballots are counted. Read more about the races here.

Congressional races

U.S. House

All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election. Republicans need to gain five seats to win a majority. As a result of redistricting and apportionment, seven states, including California, lost seats, while six states gained seats.

* Special election

U.S. Senate

Thirty five of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate are up for election. Either party needs to win only one seat to assure a majority. Two special elections to fill the remainder of Sens. Kamala Harris' and Jim Inhofe's terms are also being held.

Governor races

Thirty-six governors' seats are at stake this election, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom's.
