Share

Burbank women pursuing a college education recently received scholarships from the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic, a network of local women’s sororities.

Awards of varying amounts are given annually to eligible young women who are graduating high school and plan to attend a four-year college or university in the fall, as well as to eligible women who are attending college and are members in good standing of a National Panhellenic Conference sorority. Funds are raised at an annual benefit luncheon.

Ari Sadanaga, of Burbank, received the college sorority-member scholarship. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta at Loyola Marymount University, and is majoring in political science and Asian and Pacific studies. She holds an officer position in her sorority and participates in a variety of campus and community activities.

High school scholarship recipients, who all graduated in June from Burbank High School, are Angel Iwouma, who will attend Mount Saint Mary’s University; Mindy Kim, who will attend Biola University; Rachel Trujillo, who will attend UC Berkeley; and Sharmagh Aghabeigi, who will attend UC Irvine.

Glendale Panhellenic officers and volunteers are President Janice Paul, La Cañada Flintridge, Delta Delta Delta; Vice President/Benefit Chair Georgine Archer, Burbank, Delta Gamma; Secretary Kim Westhoff, Glendale, Alpha Omicron Pi; Treasurer Elaine Chapman, La Cañada Flintridge, Kappa Kappa Gamma; Scholarship Social Chair Jerri Johnson, Pasadena, Sigma Sigma Sigma; and Scholarship Chair Julie Weller, Glendale, Delta Zeta.

Others serving are scholarship committee members Cathy Daniel, South Pasadena, Pi Beta Phi; Lynne Graves, La Cañada Flintridge, Alpha Delta Pi; and Files/Recommendations chairs Rondi Werner Redmann and Deb Ann Orfalea, both of Glendale and members of Zeta Tau Alpha.

The group was established in 1947 and serves the Burbank, Glendale and surrounding areas with member volunteers coming from one of the 26 sororities recognized by the National Panhellenic Conference.

For more information about the group, visit glendalepanhellenic.org. Volunteers are needed to become sorority alumnae chapter delegates or individual members in the group. In addition, high school or college women interested in information about or assistance with sorority recruitment in fall 2015 or spring 2016 can find additional information on the website.

Community members meet nonprofits

Leadership Burbank introduced community members to Burbank nonprofit organizations during the second annual Nonprofit Symposium & Faire last month at Woodbury University.

Representatives of various nonprofits were available for one-on-one conversations with guests, covering information such as serving on committees and boards of directors of those organizations.

Some of the nonprofits represented were Burbank Arts For All, Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley, Burbank Temporary Aid Center, Burbank Community YMCA, Family Promise of the Verdugos, Kids’ Community Dental Clinic and La Providencia Guild of Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

In addition, Robert Egger, founder/president of L.A. Kitchen, was the keynote speaker. L.A. Kitchen recovers fresh fruits and vegetables to fuel a culinary arts program for individuals emerging out of foster care and provides hands-on training from food-industry professionals.

Community partners helping Leadership Burbank host the event were the Southern California Gas Co., the Burbank Nonprofit Coalition and Woodbury University.

Girls vie in Baseball Jamboree

More than 400 Ponytail League Girls competed in many softball-skills events during the Foothill Civitan Club’s 38th Baseball Jamboree at George Izay Park late last month.

Trophies provided by the Civitans were presented by staff members of the parks department.

Delivering remarks that kicked off the event were Burbank Mayor Bob Frutos, city officials, parks and recreation board members and staff as well as Mary Bernier, president-elect of Foothill Civitan.

Participants consumed more than 400 hot dogs served up by members of the Foothill and Burbank Civitan clubs, including Barbara Zagon, Dee Dee Ruhlow, Kathy Hodgins, Deanna Pettersen, Millie Montante, Jenice McGlynn, Foothill President Shirley Witt, and California District Lt. Gov. Sandy Lucas.

Local students perform at concert

John Burroughs High School sophomore Maya Paredes and freshman Ella Jennings, along with Jordan Middle School student Eyen Paredes, will be featured in a free concert titled “Summer Music Soiree” from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Olive Ave.

A raffle and suggested donation will benefit the nonprofit group Education Through Music – L.A., which provides orchestra and music programs for Providencia Elementary in Burbank, in addition to other Title 1 schools throughout Los Angeles.

On the program will be Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Trio No. 1 Elegiaque” and Brahms’ “Cello Sonata No. 1.” The program will open with a short piece by a small group of Education Through Music – L.A. string musicians from Providencia.
