On the Town: White-Shelby takes lead at La Providencia Guild

“If you want something done, ask a busy person.”

Although that quote has been attributed to numerous people over the years, it is widely accepted that it was first said by Benjamin Franklin.

While old Ben has been gone more than 225 years, that bit of advice still holds true, and is clearly the case when it comes to Lynn White-Shelby, who recently took over the presidential reins of the La Providencia Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

A former five-term president of the local chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn., White-Shelby has served in leadership roles with the local Boys & Girls Club, Roosevelt Elementary School, the Burbank Senior Citizens Board and, in 2015, was honored by U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff as Burbank’s 2015 Congressional District Woman of the Year.

Accepting the presidential gavel from her predecessor, Joan Chandler, during the guild’s reorganization ceremony held recently at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, White-Shelby announced the theme for her term will be “Light the Lives of Children.”

This annual event, which establishes the guild’s new executive officers and honors those who served during the previous year, was made possible by chairwoman Veronica Chavoor and her committee — Mary Fraser, Deborah Spang, Mary Jo Hjelmstrom, Nancy Johnson, Judy Gragg and Sharon Ranshaw.

Along with White-Shelby, the organization’s 2016-17 leadership now includes Glenda Jones as the first vice president and Lorelei Kelley as the second vice president. Rounding out the executive roles will be DeeDee Rowlands, secretary, Nancy Wiggins, treasurer, and Ann O’Donnell-Gardner, who will handle the guild’s public relations.

Among the special guests in attendance at the ceremony and luncheon were Bonnie McClure and Suzanne Lapis, who, respectively, serve as the chairwoman and director of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ Associates and Affiliates, as well as Shirley Mae Ricketts, Mary Hill and Mavien Ready, a trio of women who represent 131 years of cumulative guild membership.

Also acknowledged during the festivities were new guild members Joan Albriton, Dana Duncan, Janet Garrison, Edna Minogue, Christy Morse, Kate Ogden, Sunny Peltier, Delda Sciurba and Marylouise Valdes.

Chartered by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in 1947, the La Providencia Guild’s mission is to foster interest in the work of the pediatric medical facility with contributions of service and funds.
