On the Town: Individual talents come together in ‘Creative Expressions’ exhibit

Share

A collaboration of five award-winning painters and four ceramic artists came together Friday evening to celebrate the opening of “Creative Expressions,” the exhibit that will run at the Burbank Creative Arts Center Gallery through Oct. 27.

Presenting works in pottery, sculpture, oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, the exhibit demonstrates the unique individuality and creative expression each artist brings to the current showing.

During Friday night’s opening reception, a mixed-media acrylic painting titled “Little Lotus Unbound” by Andrea Raft, was among the pieces that drew attention from the art-supporting assemblage.

Saying that her work reflects her love of Asian art, Raft explained her use of a natural earthy palette, layered textures, found objects and collage.

“Together, [they] create a sense of history and a quite meditative space,” she said.

Among the beautiful and eclectic ceramics on display was a clay sculpture titled “Ocean Spirit,” by ceramicist Dorean Callari.

“My work translates my inner vision to outside reality,” said Callari, who went on to explain her work has been a key that has taken her on a journey through a looking glass, down a rabbit hole and into her secret garden.

Other artists whose creations round out the eclectic exhibit are Joan Foster, Carole Gillin, Karen Hansen, Judy Koenig, Arnie Kubelun, Vera Maguire and Genie Thomsen.

Presenting a new exhibit on a monthly basis, the Creative Arts Center Gallery will finish out 2016 with a November show that will feature the work of members of the Burbank Art Assn., followed by its annual Holiday Boutique in December.

The November show, which will officially commence at an opening-night reception Nov. 4, will showcase the creations of artists associated with the Burbank Art Assn., a nonprofit volunteer organization that has stimulated and encouraged local artists since 1950.

Members consist of artists, from beginners to seasoned professionals, who work in a variety of visual art mediums and styles.

The gallery’s Holiday Boutique, which will be open from Dec. 2 to 15, will provide Burbankers with a unique gift shopping experience that offers a wide selection of original pottery, paintings, photography, ornaments, decorations, clothing, scarves, jewelry and mosaics that have been created by students and instructors at the Creative Arts Center and members of Burbank’s Fine Arts Federation.

The Burbank Creative Arts Center Gallery, at 1100 W. Clark Ave. in George Izay Park, is open Monday through Saturday. For hours and other information, call (818) 238-5397.
