City officials announced Thursday that Eric Garcia will succeed Tom Lenahan as the chief of the Burbank Fire Department.

Garcia currently serves as the department’s assistant fire chief and has been with the agency since 1994. He is set to take over for Lenahan at a change-of-command ceremony on Dec. 28.

Lenahan announced his retirement in October after 30 years with the department. Beginning next month, he will serve as the chief of Hollywood Burbank Airport’s fire department.

According to Simone McFarland, a spokeswoman for the city, Garcia was chosen to take over from Lenahan after a one-month internal recruitment process.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity and eager to get to work,” Garcia said in a statement. “I’m proud to serve the city of Burbank.”
