Burbank school officials are planning to tap into a roughly $1-million grant this spring to better train the district’s newest teachers so they can become strong educators and leaders.

The state gives school districts the funds to support their newest teachers and administrators, including those who are still working on completing the requirements to obtain their teaching credential, said Sharon Cuseo, assistant superintendent of Burbank Unified.

The California Department of Education’s Educator Effectiveness grant will provide both new teachers and administrators the ability to collaborate with longtime professionals, attend conferences and participate in other training specific to the school where they work, Cuseo said.

The Burbank Unified School Board is expected to review the district’s plan for spending the funds during a meeting on Thursday.

The board members’ final review follows a public hearing they held about the plan earlier this month.

Once Burbank Unified school officials are authorized to access the funds, they must show state officials how they used the money to train their employees by July 2018.
